Full-time Airstream Life: February Camping Reviews

W0o boy February, you were an expensive month! And for that we blame the Florida Keys! We still cannot get over how bananas expensive it is to camp at an RV Park in the Keys during the winter months. It was a bucket list destination for us, but it is very unlikely we will return. We traveled a long distance from the Florida Keys to Charleston, SC in this month. Read on for our reviews of our February camping destinations.

We tried, and tried, and tried to get a reservation at one of the Florida State Parks in the Keys to no avail. So we bit the bullet and booked a four night stay at Big Pine Key RV Resort. The park had nice facilities with a pool and clubhouse, that we didn't use because we spent all our time adventuring in the Keys. When our float plane trip to Dry Tortugas got cancelled, we were grateful that they allowed us to stay an extra night, even if our budget was less than appreciative. We enjoyed watching the pelicans fish on the canal from our site, but didn't love the overall feel of the park, which was very much geared to those who are retired.

Skidway Island State Park

We picked Skidway Island State Park for its proximity to Savannah, and it was perfectly located to explore the area. We experienced a torrential downpour for two days and our site had ankle deep standing water in front of the door at one point! We left Georgia covered in sand, but still glad we picked this park. We would return to this park and Savannah for sure!

James Island County Park

Our favorite part of our stay at James Island was getting to meet and befriend some other Airstreamers! It is fairly rare to meet other couples around our age in this lifestyle and we loved our time getting to know new friends around the campfire. The downsides to this park were the cost per night (yikes!) the out of control amount of pollen that exploded on every surface, and the bugs. And dang, if it's this humid in February, we can't imagine how horrific it must feel in the summer. We enjoyed our time in Charleston, but would be unlikely to return to this park.

We filled in our time with multiple Harvest Host and Boondockers Welcome stays. The most unique stay was our Boondockers Welcome stay, in which we camped right next to a private airstrip. It was so coolr to watch the planes take off with our morning coffee. Our favorite Harvest Host of the bunch was definitely Coastal Empire Brewery. We stayed in their parking lot and it happened to be trivia night. So not only did we enjoy tasting their beers, we got to take home a four pack as a prize!
