December is definitely the month that we slowed down our pace, and spent more time at fewer locations. We both felt like we fully exhaled to have fewer travel days in this month. Once again, had a good mix of campgrounds on public lands, with private RV parks. We picked one splurge RV Park on the Florida Panhandle because we knew we wanted to spend some time enjoying those white sand beaches! Read on for our reviews of our December stops!
Davis Bayou Campground is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and is right on the gulf coast fairly close to Biloxi, Mississippi. We enjoyed our walks along the seashore, learning about the ecosystem at the visitors center, and going into nearby Ocean Springs for supplies. One of the nicest Federal Campgrounds we've stayed at so far.
We got very lucky and scored a back in spot at Meaher State Park that looked directly out to Mobile Bay. We enjoyed some seriously gorgeous sunsets, but the weather changed so often (from foggy, to rainy, to overcast, to sunny) that it was a bit challenging to enjoy the outdoors as much as we would've liked. This state park is not far from Mobile, but we didn't explore the city at all, as we very much wanted a nice slow, and quiet week in nature.
Geronimo RV Park in Miramar Beach, Florida was definitely a splurge. We knew we wanted to be in walking distance to the gorgeous white sand beaches of the panhandle and this park fit the bill. Overall, the small park was lovely and the sites were well situated so you don't reach out and touch your neighbor's rig like in some parks. Yes it was a bit spendy at $700 for a week, but the seven minute walk to the beach made it worth if for us. It was also perfectly located for exploring the surrounding seaside communities of Destin and Seaside (where they filmed the movie The Truman Show.) We love this part of the country and could definitely see ourselves heading back here!
Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park was a delightful surprise, and we were sorry we didn't stay longer to explore more! There were so many lovely walking trails and we witnessed some gorgeous sunsets. Definitely worth at least a four night's stay in our opinion.
Wekiwa Springs State Park is one of the very first campsites we booked when we decided to hit the road as full-time RVers. Reservations for Florida Parks open 11 months to the day at 8 AM. For those of you doing the math, this means that if you want to book a popular campground, and you live in Seattle, you wake up at 4:45 AM to book. We choose this park primarily for it's proximity to Orlando, as we knew we wanted to spend the holidays at Universal Orlando, and the park is a 30-40 minute drive. Ultimately, we both ended up with Covid the week after Christmas, so we didn't get to enjoy this park as much since we spent so much time sleeping. If you are looking for an Orlando campsite, and don't want to stay in an RV park, we would absolutely recommend Wekiwa Springs.
