Capture the Moment: Photography on the Road

I have loved photography since being part of the yearbook during my Freshman year of highschool in 19… cough, cough… where was I... oh yes! Photography has been a long lasting joy of mine through the years. I love capturing moments with friends, beautiful landscapes, or the silly face of a pet. When life gets chaotic and stressful, I find it difficult to make the time to explore my creative side. I can definitely say the first year on the road was chaotic! As we’ve started year two with a deliberately slower pace, I’ve found joy again in capturing the beauty of the life we live. Oh, what a life we live!

I carry a day bag everywhere I go, and recently made the choice to include my camera as part of my everyday carry. Now, when I see something beautiful I take a moment to decide if I want to live in the experience, or if I want to capture the moment to remind myself of the experience and share it with others. What you’ll find here are some of the experiences from late Summer and early Fall 2023 that I wanted to share.

Utah's red rocks can be seen in the distance out of the oval kitchen window of the Airstream
Outside Capitol Reef National Park looking through our kitchen window. I love seeing the world from a new perspective.

The stars are visible in the night sky above the front of the Airstream
Night photography is a joy and challenge all its own. Moonlight reflecting off of Tabitha the Airstream in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.

The Milky Way
Dark skies at Great Basin National Park make for great shots of the Milky Way!

The full moon was so bright this looks like daytime... but the night sky shows constellations. Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Badwater Basin is filled with water and the mountains in the distance can be seen reflecting in the water.
Death Valley National Park. Badwater Basin flooded during Hurricane Hilary, fall 2023. I captured this rare reflection of the sky and mountains the first day it was open to the public.

A zoomed in image of salt crystals
Salt crystallization in Death Valley National Park is impressive. Sometimes the biggest impressions are in the smallest package. These threads were so small it was hard to capture them "on film".

Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon rock formations in Capitol Reef
We took a guided tour with Sleeping Rainbow Adventures and got to capture sunset at Temple of the Sun and Moon. The beauty was impressive.

A processed image of Michelle in front of the Temple of the Sun in Capitol Reef National Park
Sometimes it's fun to lean hard into the image processing... It's like walking into a painting!

A close up photo of Salto the miniature pinscher
And sometimes you leave the photo alone. This is our little man... our buddy... our Salto. A simple photo which captures his personality... I will cherish having this memory after he's gone.

A shadowy tree in the foreground with the sunset colored sky over Lake Tahoe in the background
Sunset over Lake Tahoe... Nevada? California? It is stunningly beautiful no matter which state you're viewing it from!

I hope these images inspire you to dive back in to a long-lost hobby. Maybe you pick up that old instrument, or paint brush, or book of poetry, or whatever it was that brought you joy.

Life is precious and short and can be overwhelming.

But if you take the time to find joy, you can truly feel alive.
